Building a Shopify Store for Regional Food – Rinner

Rinner produces traditional South Tyrolean speck and regional specialities. Their existing shop looked fine but wasn't converting. We migrated to Shopify, added bundles, a wishlist, gift cards, and an optimised checkout — and handed the client a store they can manage themselves from day one.

Rinner & Speck

Rinner  is a South Tyrolean food producer specialising in handcrafted speck and regional delicacies — products that are genuinely hard to find outside the area. Moving to direct online sales was the obvious next step: a way to reach new customers and reduce dependence on local retail channels. As a Shopify agency in South Tyrol, we supported them through every step of the transition.

The starting point

The client already had a shop on another platform. Three problems made it underperform:

  • Platform with no room to grow.

The shop worked technically but wasn't built for scale. A wishlist, customer feedback, and bundle pricing were all missing.

  • Weak checkout performance.

Too many steps between browsing and buying — especially on mobile. That's where most drop-offs happen.

  • Manual product management.

Adding or changing products required agency help every time, creating unnecessary delays in day-to-day operations.

What we built

We rebuilt the store on Shopify (Grow plan), importing existing products, structuring categories, and selecting a theme that matched the brand's character.

  • Migration to Shopify (Grow plan)

The Grow plan supports multiple admin accounts — useful for ongoing collaboration. We set up our own agency access, so support and development happen without friction.

  • Checkout optimisation and payment methods

The new checkout supports Shop Pay and PayPal — both reduce the purchase process to a few clicks. For returning buyers, it's near-frictionless.

  • Bundle offers with flexible discount tiers

We implemented bundle options with configurable discount levels. This increases average order value without needing to acquire new customers — one of the most effective levers in e-commerce.

Full client autonomy — Products can be added, edited, or removed without agency involvement.

Scalable infrastructure — Shopify's app ecosystem allows future extensions without custom builds.

Shopify store development for food producers in South Tyrol

This project makes one thing clear: regional food producers often already have the right product. What's missing is the right sales channel.

Why regional food products work well online

South Tyrolean speck, mountain cheese, DOC wines, artisan grappa — these are products that are genuinely difficult to find outside the region. That scarcity is a competitive advantage in e-commerce. Someone looking for authentic speck and not finding it at a local supermarket will search for it online. A producer with this kind of assortment has everything they need to sell successfully through a direct channel.

What a Shopify store for food producers needs to do

The technical requirements are specific: a checkout that works smoothly on mobile, straightforward shipping integration, and product management the producer can handle independently. Shopify addresses all of these better than most alternatives — through its app ecosystem, ease of use, and scalable architecture. For food producers considering their first serious online channel, it's a practical starting point that doesn't require a large technical team to maintain.

Our approach: a store built to grow

We don't hand over a store and disappear. We build the foundation and stay available for what comes next — new product categories, seasonal campaigns, additional integrations. The client handles day-to-day operations independently; we step in when the business needs to evolve technically. See also: AlpenFein — food e-commerce on Shopware.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to have a Shopify store built?

Costs depend on scope — which features are integrated, how many products need to be migrated, and what custom configuration is required. A professional Shopify store with checkout optimisation, payment integration, and the key plugins typically starts in the four-figure range. We're happy to discuss your specific needs and give you a realistic estimate.

Can I manage the Shopify store myself after launch?

Yes — that's one of Shopify's practical advantages. Adding, editing, or removing products doesn't require technical skills. For more complex changes or extensions, we're available on an ongoing basis. For Rinner we deliberately built the store so the client handles day-to-day management without agency involvement.

Is Shopify a good fit for food producers in South Tyrol?

Yes — particularly for direct sales of regional specialities. Shopify offers straightforward shipping integration, mobile-optimised checkout, and a broad app selection for bundles, gift cards, and customer communication. Our work with Rinner and AlpenFein shows that food e-commerce in South Tyrol works when the technical foundation is right.

How long does it take to build a Shopify store?

A well-scoped Shopify project can go live within a few weeks — depending on product count, integrations needed, and how quickly decisions are made on the client side. Our Südtirol Musikverlag project, for example, launched in around two months. Rinner followed a similarly compact timeline.
